The Hill Eatery is the latest venture from the owners of Porch and Parlour (which is just waiting around the corner) and chef Sam Smith.
Porch and Parlour is one of our favourite brunch spots by the beach, so we were eagerly awaiting the opening of The Hill Eatery, which is open for lunch and dinner. We checked out a few items from their bar and lunch menu, and we weren’t disappointed.
Inside, the restaurant is refined, relaxed and rustic, complete with high wooden benches, menus on mini clipboards, hanging vintage light fixtures and ceiling fans.
Cuisine: Modern, Bar food.
Price:$10-$15 for bar snacks, $15-$25 for lunch menu items.
Most likely to see: Guys with slicked back hair, Girls in buttoned up chambray shirts.
We had:
Paella arancini, saffron and aioli ($12.00): Once you cut through the crunchy outer crust, inside is an interesting take on the ol’ arancini. Filled with a tasty paella, this bar snack will bring a smile to even the most expressionless bondi hipster.
Pork belly sandwich with apple coleslaw and duck fat potatoes ($16.00): The sandwich was really tasty, and filled with delicious pork belly and a great slaw. The colours were vibrant, and the salted duck fat potatoes were a great side.
Big bowl of grilled prawns with aioli ($22.00): The generous serve of grilled prawns was a great share plate. Be prepared to either demonstrate your amazing de-shelling skills using a knife and fork (it is possible), or hopefully you are in a safe zone where eating with your fingers is not a deal-breaker. The hard work will pay off, as the prawns were delicious and gone in no time at all.
The final verdict: The Hill Eatery might be new on the scene, but the dishes we tried from the menu were addictive, colourful and most importantly really great to eat. During the day the restaurant’s large windows take full advantage of the natural sunlight, and the mood inside is chilled, yet classy. It’s already great in Winter, and we predict this will be the perfect hangout for those hot Summer days. Bring on the cocktails.
