Alexandria continues to be propelled into hipster heaven with lots of great cafes and eateries being opened this year. Bread & Circus continues this tradition, although labels itself as a wholefoods canteen. There are no yummy drummies or caramel buds to be found here. Nestled just off Fountain Street at Alexandria near McEvoy street, B&C offers up a menu that changes daily that caters for the health conscious lunch lover.
Inside there are long communal tables to easily share with friends, or if you are in a smaller group, are perfect to spy on the meals of others. Once you finish your meal at B&C, check out Don Campos next door for a caffeine hit.
Cuisine: Brunch/Lunch with a focus on organic ingredients.
Price:$15-$25 for lunch menu items.
Most likely to see: Aspiring entertainment moguls (on our table was a fashion blogger and music producer).
We had:
Parmesan not-so-scrambled eggs with truffle oil, avocado & tomato ($18.00 + $4.00 for free-range ham): A perfect start to any day, the truffle oil was not overdone in this dish, and the eggs tasted fantastic. The shreds of ham and avocado wedges just topped it off.
The daily plate – Organic Inglewood chicken schnitzel with a rosemary-thyme-sage sourdough & biodynamic egg crumb, served with horseradish yoghurt & salad ($24.00): There’s nothing worse than a frozen orange schnitzel with fake chicken. Not the case here. Squeeze a bit of lemon and smear a bit of the horseradish yoghurt and you’ve got yourself a great schnitty dish. The salads were also refreshing and the potato was the bomb.
Giant chocolate chip cookie ($5.00): Giant chocolate chip cookies need no further explanation. Perfect way to balance the coffees from next door.
The final verdict: Bread & Circus is another great addition to the whole organic-food-in-alexandria movement. The place is brimming with sunlight during the day and the food that was coming out of the kitchen all looked pretty amazing.
The place is decked out with plenty of fresh flowers and vegetables on each table, and even if you do order a schnitty or a giant choc-chip cookie, you will leave feeling a little bit healthier.
